Qatar's Doha Metro project records world’s lowest accident frequency rate

Qatar Rail’s Doha Metro project has achieved another distinction among similar mega projects in the world by reducing its accident frequency rate (AFR) to lowest 0.021, According to information shared by the Qatar Rail on its social media accounts.

According to Qatar Rail, there is continuous improvement in AFR which has dropped from 0.034 in June 2017 to 0.021 in June 2018. It is to be mentioned here that industry standard AFR stands at 0.05.

“The project has achieved an accident frequency rate (AFR) of 0.021 at the 86 percent completion mark, among the lowest AFR ever achieved on any similar mega projects and far below the industry standard,” Qatar Rail’s post on its Facebook account said.

It added: “Qatar Rail and its partners continue to build on and improve this performance with strict accountability and transparency, and through an unwavering commitment to proper supervision, training and education.”

The figures shared by Qatar Rail show with more than 560 million man-hours, more than 82,000 workforce and 425, 000 inductions, its project has achieved the lowest AFR of 0.021. Qatar Rail imparted training for 1,630,000 hours for its workers as well.

These figures reflect the world-class safety standards met by Qatar Rail which were achieved by continuous training of workers, adherence to international practices among others.

Recently, Qatar Rail has renewed its certification to three international management system standards which recognises its continued commitment to meeting world class standards in quality, health & Safety and environmental sustainability.

This accolade was a result of management systems audits performed by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).

The successfully renewed certification includes the three international management system standards ISO 9001:2015 for Quality, ISO 14001:2015 for Environment and OHSAS 18001:2007 for Occupational Health and Safety respectively.

Apart from achieving the world-class safety standards, Qatar Rail in last one year has made remarkbale progress on Doha Metro and other projects.

From June 2017 to June 2018 Qatar Rail achieved its best progress rate ever. By end of May 2018, the Doha Metro project progress stood at 85%, while in May 2017 it stood at 59%, which means that Qatar Rail was able to achieve around 30% progress in one year, the highest progress rate achieved since the inception of the railway projects in 2013.

To this day, 100% of construction and civil works on the Doha Metro project have been completed this day, MEP works progress stands at 69%, and architectural finishes progress stands at 46%.
