Everything you need to know about Qatar National Day

Qatar National Day(QND) on Dec. 18 marks the date in 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, the founder of the State of Qatar, who ruled Qatar during 1878 – 1913. He ran the issues of the nation alongside his ageing father, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Thani, in 1876. Following the passing away of his dad on 18 December 1878, he took over.

 

Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani was a military leader, judge and researcher, knight and artist having both courage and generosity. To defend Qatar he battled numerous wars.

He was born around 1827 and was raised in Fuweirat North East of Qatar where he took in the Quran, its sciences, statute, Islamic law, human expressions of equestrian,along with falconry and hunting skills.

It is a national holiday and most of the public are given the day off from their work. Preceding a decree in June 2007, Qatar National Day was every year celebrated on September 3, marking the day of Qatar's independence in 1971.

2016 cancellation

In 2016, Qatar cancel all its national day celebrations to show solidarity with the people of Aleppo during the ongoing shelling by Syrian government forces.

According to QNA report,"In solidarity with our people in the city of Aleppo, those who are subjected to the worst kind of repression and torture, displacement and genocide, his Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, has ordered cancellation of all celebrations and events of the national day"
