Chest pain

Chest pain is the most common symptom of heart disease. Patients feel the pain or discomfort when the heart is not receiving enough blood through its coronary arteries. There are two types of chest pain: typical chest pain and atypical chest pain.

Typical chest pain is felt as a kind of weight under the breastbone. It may occur during exercise or intense emotion. Patients can get rid of this pain with rest or medication.

Atypical chest pain is felt as a sharp pain that suddenly comes and goes. The pain starts in the chest, but may also felt in the abdomen, back or in the arm. This pain is not related to physical effort and cannot be relieved with medication.

Shortness of breath

Another common symptom that occurs among patients suffering from heart disease is breathlessness or difficulty breathing. This symptom may occur during holidays or a physical exercise and may indicate that the heart is not functioning properly.

Heart attack

Heart attack or myocardial infarction may be the first sign of heart disease. A heart attack is caused by temporary lack of oxygenated blood that flows through the heart. The five most important signs that a patient feels during a heart attack are: chest pain, pain that radiates to the jaw, neck or back pain, mild headache, pain in the arm or shoulder and shortness of breath.

Chronic fatigue

Chronic fatigue can arise as a symptom of heart disease. It can occur during any physical activity and the patient may not be able to perform daily tasks. Patients may have difficulty to climb stairs or walk a relatively short distance.

Irregular heartbeat

Some symptoms of heart disease may be due to irregular heart rate. The heartbeat can be very fast, slow or irregular. Abnormal heart rhythm may be a symptom for tachycardia (fast heartbeat), bradycardia (slow heartbeat), trembling heart, dizziness or loss of consciousness. If the patient feels these symptoms for a longer period, they should seek medical attention.
