A sudden spurt in the number of children of NRI workers from Saudi Arabia taking admissions in schools in India has raised fears of an exodus, a report in the Times of India said.
A number of schools in Hyderabad have reported a rise in the numbers of wards of NRI workers from the Gulf and particularly from Saudi Arabia.
“Parents are saying that living in Saudi Arabia with families is becoming increasingly expensive, so many of them are sending them to India,” the report quoted M A Lateef, Chairman, MS Group of Schools, as saying.
A Times of India report last year had pointed to the fact that living in Saudi Arabia could get expensive for NRIs as the kingdom would impose a family tax on dependents of expats from July 1.
The imposition of tax may force Indians NRI workers, the largest expat group in Saudi Arabia, to consider returning to India.
The kingdom had imposed the levy in order to raise revenue from the millions of expats working in the Kingdom but some experts believe that the move is counterproductive as it will force the expats to relocate to other countries or return to their native land.
